Dear JCOGS family,

I am sad to say that we are living in a time when Jewish hatred is spilling forth every day in the United States and beyond. We are dealing with an increased trend of those who spew, support, or simply ignore the antisemitism of this moment. Prominent athletes, politicians, celebrities, and the broader media are espousing anti-Jewish tropes. We as Jews in North America are safer and more secure in the recent past than we have been in other times in our history. However, we have always known that antisemitism is, at the very least, part of the undercurrent of our society, and it is now predictably growing more explicit in this time of uncertainty and tumult.

Perhaps most chilling and dangerous in this growing trend is that those who espouse antisemitism have tremendous platforms of prominence, power, and influence. They normalize and mainstream anti-Jewish sentiment.

The antisemitism of these past days, months, and years only shows that—once again—we cannot grow complacent.

The story of Hanukkah is the story of a Greco-Roman kingdom that takes over and assaults the Jews and Jewishness of their time, which inspires the heroic defense by the Maccabees of the Jewish people and our values. The Maccabees stood strong on the principles of their commitment to a vibrant Jewish presence. And when they won back our people’s freedom, the first thing they did was reassert our Jewish ways, beginning with the Temple and the miraculous oil that burned in the Temple’s sacred Menorah.

Like the Maccabees, we must strengthen our resolve against the forces of antisemitism, and all forms of racism and bigotry. And we also must show and grow our Jewish values and presence.

Just as the Maccabees fought to uphold the Jewish way of life, let your presence be known. Let our communal presence be known.

This Hanukkah, JCOGS is showing our joyful Jewish presence across north-central Vermont. Consider how you will show up in community to show your solidarity and your joy for Judaism.

Join us in Stowe as we dedicate and light our own large Menorah on the first night of Hanukkah, with guest singer Batya Levine. Jump in on the action in our Iron Chef Hanukkah competition or at our Shabbat Hanukkah. Come to the North East Kingdom for a Hanukkah party, Greensboro-style. Skate with us at Hanukkah on Ice in Waterbury with the Mad River Valley Jewish Community.

We will celebrate the lights that our people shine. We will stand up and be counted. We will show that among all good people of conscience, we belong here in safety.

Lamoille Community House's 365 Campaign is raising money for a permanent, year-round shelter. Warm Toes in this season of gratitude

Dear JCOGS family,

The two Thanksgivings that I spent in Brooklyn, I would go to the local soup kitchen where I volunteered weekly and would help cook and serve food for the hundreds of neighbours wanting to celebrate the holiday. These were Americans who wanted to enjoy this abundant meal, but were unable to pay for it themselves, or who didn't have family to celebrate with. Later that day, Alison and I would head to Long Island to celebrate with her family, now my family, too.

I hope all of our American members, and I heard even some of our Canadian ones, were able to celebrate this year among family and friends with abundant gratitude. There is so much to be grateful for, but it all begins with the basics.

Two years ago, one of our members, Emily Rosenbaum, heard that donated clothing rarely includes socks and underwear. That’s where we stepped in at JCOGS and began a Warm Toes Fund that supports locals from never having to walk around in a Vermont winter, or any season for that matter, without those basic undergarments.

I am writing this message on Black Friday, the day where shopping deals galore mean an explosion of buying. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good deal. But it is these moments of abundance beyond the basics, like Thanksgiving, that are meant to arouse in us gratitude for what we have. And it can inspire us to provide those basic needs for those who don’t have.

I hope you will join me in this season of abundance and giving to our Wam Toes Fund.

I couldn’t help but feel those Thanksgivings in Brooklyn that I had the best of both worlds: the give and take—the take of the abundance at our family’s table and the give of making sure that our neighbours got to celebrate too. In this season, may that feeling of abundance inspire us all to give back.

WARM TOES

The Jewish Community of Greater Stowe’s (JCOGS) Warm Toes Fund provides socks and underwear for those in our community who are in need. Socks and underwear are rarely included in clothing donations, yet they are essential to comfort and dignity. This fund is perpetual, with sums provided directly to schools and health and human services organizations to provide socks and underwear for those in need.

Special event: 1st night Large Menorah Lighting + Singing our way into Hanukkah with special guest Batya Levine + Latkes & : Join in community to sing our way into Hanukkah with special guest Batya Levine and come dedicate our outdoor large menorah as we light it for the first time ever. Hanukkah is a holiday of dreaming and miracles, of kindling light in the darkness. We will use our voices and the practice of communal singing to explore the gifts of both darkness and light, as we make our way into the first moments of Hanukkah together. We will sing and light the menorah at 4:30pm, then move indoors, where participants are asked to mask for this event. All-ages welcome and encouraged. Does the couple that kills together - in books - stay together? That's one of the questions that award-winning Vermont author and JCOGS member Sandy (S. Lee) Manning and her husband, Jim (J.B.) Manning, will be answering about their books, their writing styles, and their marriage at an event at JCOGS on November 15 to celebrate the launches of their very different novels. Sandy writes thrillers featuring a Russian Jewish immigrant working as an intelligence operative for the United States; her latest book, Bloody Soil, involves a neo-Nazi plot to overthrow democracy in Germany. Jim's debut novel, Richter the Mighty, is a satiric political thriller that sprawls from Washington D.C. to Florida to Paris, France when a coke-sniffing president dispatches various miscreants to hunt down his children who've discovered he murdered one of his wives. Join for dessert and a fun evening discussing the books and how two former lawyers became writers for their second act.

Raise the Roof party tomorrow/Saturday night to support the Lamoille Community House

Dear JCOGS family,

As promised, we are taking adult education to the next level at JCOGS through a new initiative: Learning for Life. Are you ready to ask some of the toughest questions and come to deep wisdom on how we understand this moment we are living in?

Two of those initiatives start imminently, and I want to make sure that you know about them so you can jump on board:

On Monday evening at 5:45PM, our second online cohort of the Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism class begins. Come try out the first class and see what you think. This year, this groundbreaking curriculum focuses on ethics: the choices we make in life. I’ve been poring over the texts we are going to study in this coming session. Such interesting learning to be had, including exploring questions like: Do I have a particular obligation to my own people or are my obligations more universal? Where should I donate the bulk of my time, money, and energies—to causes within my community or to causes that affect others? If you are at all interested, learn more and register HERE!

Also, tomorrow after Shabbat morning services, I am teaching the first of three classes on chanting from the Torah, an introduction and refresher for those wanting to learn this age-old tradition. The Torah has been our lighthouse for countless generations, charting the way home for us. Details are HERE to join us in person or online.

There’s a rabbinic maklochet/argument about whether learning or good deeds are more important in the world (hint: learning should lead to good deeds!). I’ll let you decide by showcasing two action-oriented opportunities this weekend where you can make a difference:

Tomorrow/Saturday at Alfie’s from 6-9PM, expect a ruckus party, tacos, drinks, a silent auction (and a speech from me) at the Raise the Roof fundraiser for the Lamoille Community House. Get your tickets NOW.

On Sunday, from Noon to 3PM, help a family avoid eviction by pitching in with some work gloves and sweat equity. It’s Mitzvah Day! Register HERE for the address.

Sandy writes thrillers featuring a Russian Jewish immigrant working as an intelligence operative for the United States; her latest book, Bloody Soil, involves a neo-Nazi plot to overthrow democracy in Germany. Jim's debut novel, Richter the Mighty, is a satiric political thriller that sprawls from Washington D.C. to Florida to Paris, France when a coke-sniffing president dispatches various miscreants to hunt down his children who've discovered he murdered one of his wives. Dear JCOGS family,

This epic holiday season has come to a close. What a journey, starting with the month of Elul that led us to the reboot of Rosh Hashanah, into asking forgiveness on Yom Kippur, to the joy (and tacos) of Sukkot, the praying for rain on Shemini Atzeret, and the completion and renewal of the Torah cycle on Simchat Torah!
I want to offer so much gratitude to ALL THE MANY HEARTS AND HANDS that made this High Holy Day season possible.

Before I go further though, I have two requests for you. First, we truly value your appreciation and constructive feedback about your High Holy Day experience, so please share it with us by filling out this 90-second form. Second, stay connected this year. If you are not a member and were moved by the High Holy Day services, consider joining JCOGS. If you are a member, take a deeper step into our community. Dear JCOGS family,

As we begin the new year, I’d like to announce a new adult education initiative at JCOGS:
Learning for Life

Jewish education has always been at the forefront of consciousness for Jews. As perhaps you’ve heard me quote before, my zaidie used to say in his thick Yiddish accent: “H-education siz da most importent ting.”

But how do we turn our learning into something that is relevant to our lives? To our hopes? Our existence? Our future? Learning for Life seeks to raise the bar on how we live our lives by integrating Jewish insights and wisdom into ourselves, while shaping Jewish learning now and for the future.

And this year’s Learning for Life starts this weekend. First, TONIGHT along with the JCOGS band, we welcome scholar-in-residence Rabbi Michael Cohen. Over a Kosher chicken dinner, Rabbi Cohen will speak about “The Bible and the Environment.” TOMORROW at Noon, join him again as he addresses: “The Environment as a Bridge to Peace: The Arava Institute as a Case Study.” In this way, we’ll look at Jewish perspectives and lived experience to combat the climate crisis and how we build bridges of peace.

Then, on MONDAY from 5:30-7PM, the learning continues as we gather for a workshop I will lead entitled Writing Your Own Ethical Will, along with a Sukkot Yizkor memorial service, both in person and online. We’ll reflect and write about how each of us can create a legacy of love to leave behind for the next generations, all inspired by the book The Beauty of What Remains. Learn more here and join us.

Some of our Learning for Life throughout this inaugural year will be old favourites, like Torah on Tap, where we look at hot topics through Jewish perspectives, all while making a l’chayyim and noshing together at one of the local joints. Another highlight is the upcoming revitalization of our library, with the most extensive collection of Jewish books in our area. In November, we launch another cohort of learning with Foundations for A Thoughtful Judaism with a focus on ethics: the choices we make in life. Stay tuned for other special speakers and surprises throughout this year and how you can connect in.

Scholar-In-Residence Sukkot Shabbat with Rabbi Michael Cohen: In April 2023, JCOGS, the Stowe Community Church, and St. John’s in the Mountains Episcopal Church will embark on the first ever Greater Stowe Holy Land Interfaith Journey to Israel, including a visit to the Arava Institute in Southern Israel. Join Rabbi Michael Cohen for lunch and learn during the holiday of Sukkot as he speaks about “The Environment as a Bridge to Peace: The Arava Institute as a Case Study.” The Arava Institute sits at the critical intersection of the environment and peace. For over a quarter of a century the Institute has brought together Israeli Jews, Palestinian citizens of Israel, Palestinians of the West Bank & Gaza, Jordanians, Moroccans, and International student. UVM has sent the most students to the Institute of any university in North America. Rabbi Michael, a member of the Arava faculty since its doors opened in 1996, will share his insights on the important work of the Institute from his first hand experiences there. - Saturday, October 15 12:00pm-2:00pm

The Season of Our Joy!

Dear JCOGS family,

Experiencing these past two weeks with so many of you has filled me up with such meaning. As the gates closed on Yom Kippur during our Ne’ilah service, I could not help but smile with joy that we shared so much throughout these days through prayer, food, learning, and community-building. I saw tears of meaning shed and heard voices rising in song and laughter spreading.

Joy is precisely the emotion we look ahead to as we welcome Sukkot. Why is Yom Kippur only one day, while Sukkot is eight? Because we should not wallow in self-affliction for too long. Life is meant to be enjoyed. So, Sukkot is called Zman Simchateinu/The Season of Our Joy. Embrace joy.

Looking ahead to the holiday that begins Sunday eve, think tacos, pizza, l’chayyim, scholar-in-residence, and shaking lulav, etrog, and yes, tuchus. Try your best to pronounce schach, that natural stuff that is the “roof” of the sukkah, that temporary hut that we dwell in for these eight days, and bring some with you to the JCOGS Sukkah raising on Sunday.

As I reminded us at the end of Yom Kippur, we don’t only gather once a year as Jews. Oh, you High Holy Day Jews… don’t be strangers the rest of the year! It brings me personal joy to see you the rest of the year, starting with Sukkot. Scroll down for details of ALL the many happenings this week.

Finally, even as we embrace this season of joy, it’s still good to carry on self-reflecting. Dear JCOGS family,

For those who joined us on Rosh Hashanah, WOW! What ruach/energy, what music, what food, what a turnout, what community building! I cannot think of a more perfect way to bring in the new year in multi-age inspiring glory.

For those who missed it, or those who want to revisit all of the love generated, here are a couple of moments shared over Rosh Hashanah:

As we prepare for Yom Kippur, I want to encourage those who have a tallit/prayer shawl to bring yours and don it. We also have some for use at JCOGS. Given the holiness of the day, this is the one time of the year when the tallit is worn for each service. You may also be inspired to wear white, a sign of the purity we aspire towards.

Finally, please join us tonight for Shabbat Shuvah, the Shabbat of return and repentance. We will be indoors in our sanctuary, as we honour Larry and Ellen Gibs with a blessing and special oneg as they move away from Vermont.

Tihiyu bri’im, be well, Shabbat Shalom, Shana tova, and gmar chatima tova, may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a wonderful year ahead.

Dear JCOGS Family,

As we wind our way through the month of Elul, consider this email your early holiday alarm clock, i.e. your shofar blast, i.e., your reminder that it is time to do teshuvah and reflect on the ways you have missed the mark this year, and what you can do to repair it.

This week, we launched our Olam Chesed Education Center with great joy and kinetic, youthful energy. Our teacher Jonah Ibson taught the kids the difference between kal/light and kaved/heavy. He led them in an activity about what responsibilities feel kal and which feel kaved as we consider taking ownership for our actions in this season.

Rabbi Moses Ibn Ezra is quoted as saying: “No sin is so kal that it may be overlooked; no sin so kaved that it may not be repented of.” Surely this is our work in this season.

The responsibility of preparing for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur weighs kaved at JCOGS these days, as staff and volunteers take this season very seriously, hoping for a meaningful holiday experience for all. Yet we also balance it out with some things that are kal because this season is also about waking up joyously to our lives.

Thus, tonight’s oneg after services is catered by the new middle eastern food establishment Aladdin. Not to be missed! During the month of Elul, we’ve been featuring different members of our congregation in services. Susan Bauchner and Bobbi Rood led us in some rousing learning and singing of Psalm 96 last week. Jared Hendler will lead a stirring Yigdal tonight (come learn why this is his favourite prayer). Next week, we’ll hear some insights about candle-lighting from Julia Goldstein and another reflection on Psalm 96 from Willa Bruckner.

During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, aside from inclement weather, we will be out in the tent. We will let you know in advance in regards to weather if we are moving inside to the sanctuary. During the holidays, you can expect some breathtaking music performed by our JCOGS musicians, an Erev Rosh Hashanah talk by Priscilla Minkin that will bring us to tears, youth-friendly engagement in the playground and lower level, and too many surprises to list here (and they wouldn’t be surprises if I told you!).

If you have not yet renewed your membership or registered for the holidays, please do so.

Wishing you a proper balance in this season of kal and kaved, of light and heavy, of joy and responsibility. It is time to wake up to life!

Dear JCOGS community,

With deep sadness, we write to inform you of the peaceful passing on Saturday, September 3 of Bernice (“Bebe”) Rosenstein, beloved mother and mother-in-law of Jordy Hershman and Diana Lloyd.

Bebe was a remarkable human being, where in spite of life’s hardships, she faced it all with purpose, meaning, joy and service to family and community. While raising her children on her own, she worked for over 40 years as a nurse, while also endlessly advocating for women’s health rights. The family matriarch, she was beloved by her children, stepchildren, and grandchildren as the ever smiling, optimistic, and kind person who greeted them with her delectable baking and cooking. Bebe also contributed her time and efforts generously, including at her local synagogue. An eshet chayil, her legacy as a righteous, wise, and strong woman lives on as a model for all.

Bebe's funeral will be held in Canton, MA, on Tuesday, September 6, at 10:00 a.m. with more details here, and can be attended virtually at https://tinyurl.com/Bernice-Rosenstein. Shiva observance at the home of Jordy and Diana (25 Briarhill Road, Sharon, MA) will take place on Tuesday, September 6 from 7-9 p.m.; Wednesday, September 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; Thursday, September 8 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; and Friday, September 9 from 1-4 p.m.

We offer Jordy, Diana, and the entire family our deepest condolences and greatest comfort.

May Bernice’s memory forever be a blessing.
