Balancing Universalism and Particularism: Our Moral Responsibilities with Israel at War
Thursday, January 18, 2024 • 8 Sh'vat 5784
5:30 PM - 7:00 PMOnlineJudaism has always maintained a simultaneous, dynamic, and intertwined commitment to universalist and particularist ethics: a deep concern for all human beings in general, and for the Jewish people in particular.
How does war impact these commitments and what happens when Jews achieve national sovereignty and military power through the State of Israel? Led by Dr. Sara Labaton of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, this learning for the JCOGS community will draw on traditional and modern sources to explore the moral limits and opportunities afforded by the frameworks of universalism and particularism for Jews in the 21st century.
