Come to JCOGS to see Welcome to Yiddishland. After the film stay for music, dancing and noshing under the tent with Rabbi David and Marom, the JCOGS Band.
Welcome to Yiddishland is the story of the revival of the Yiddish language, one that follows artists from around the world across numerous disciplines as they reignite its use in music, theatre, opera, and literature in this upbeat, witty, and timely film. With excerpts from an acclaimed Yiddish-language version of Yentl to enjoyably transgressive punk-Klezmer musicians, and Barrie Kosky’s latest trailblazing production at the Berlin Opera—the endangered Yiddish language is alive and well in this rousing documentary. Yiddish was the language spoken at home in the Jewish community of Eastern Europe, but it almost disappeared when more than half of the world’s Yiddish speakers were murdered during the Holocaust. Most of the artists and performers (aka Yiddishists) in the film didn’t grow up speaking Yiddish, but all have found solace, identity, and inspiration in its rich traditions and culture. Welcome to Yiddishland offers audiences a positive, nuanced, empowered, and inclusive depiction of "Jewishness."

Midas Man explores the genius and vulnerabilities of a man who turned dreams into gold yet couldn’t quite escape his own struggles. Amidst the vibrance of a decade dancing to a new beat, Epstein’s lonely genius brilliantly shines through, echoing the sacrifices of a man from a religious family who risked it all to change music history forever. This film takes you back to the Swinging Sixties to witness his electric rise as the visionary who catapulted The Beatles from a scrappy Liverpool band into the biggest rock phenomenon of all time. From smoky backroom clubs to sold-out stadiums, Epstein didn’t just manage a band—he unleashed a cultural revolution, amplifying the sound of a generation. This captivating film chronicles Epstein’s unyielding belief in The Beatles' potential, and the personal toll he paid as he sacrificed everything to elevate his artists to the pinnacle of fame.

Yaniv is a surprising, twisty dark comedy about a Jewish high school teacher in an underserved school in the Bronx whose funding for the school’s Spring Musical is cut by the administration. He visits his Grandfather to ask how he raised extra money. His Zaida tells him that he played a high stakes version of the card game Yaniv, at an underground location run by the Hasidic Community. The teacher approaches his fellow Jewish statistics teacher, a secretly recovering gambling addict, to help him win the $10,000 needed to put on the production. With the Grandfather’s help, the teachers disguise themselves as Hasidim, but the plan goes wildly awry with mounting consequences. Help finally comes from a totally unexpected source and the show goes on with one last plot twist.

Bad Shabbos is a sold out hit at every Jewish Film Festival on the east coast. This darkly hilarious, highly entertaining story turns a New York City Shabbat family dinner into a chaotic whirlwind when two couples, Abby and Benjamin, and David and recently-converted-to-Judaism Meg, gather for what should be a typical Shabbat family dinner. An unexpected shadow looms over their night—an accidental death (or is it murder?) that threatens to unravel the whole carefully choreographed evening.
As the night spirals out of control (think Weekend at Bernie’s), the arrival of Meg’s Catholic parents from Wisconsin to meet their future in-laws for the first time, only adds to the hilarious mayhem. Scrambling to maintain a façade of normalcy for their Midwestern guests, the family finds themselves creatively bending traditions—and even inventing a few new ones out of sheer desperation!
The film’s rapid-fire dialogue, twisty script, and masterful editing keep the chaotic momentum going, delivering pure comedic gold. With its blend of family antics, sharp humor, and a warm heart, Bad Shabbos is a charmingly modern screwball comedy that brilliantly captures the hilarity and madness of one family’s unforgettable Shabbat.
