Dear JCOGS family,

Where will you be for Passover? If in Vermont, I hope you will consider joining us for the delicious, participatory, and fun 2nd Night Annual Seder at JCOGS. Details below, register now.

A congregant asked me this week for a Haggadah for their Seder. What little did she know that she was opening up Pandora's box. Perhaps no Jewish book has been more interpreted and re-interpreted than the Haggadah, the retelling of the story of the Exodus.

Here are some of my favourites:

A Night of Questions, a Reconstructionist, modern view, with insightful contemporary readings
The Holistic Haggadah: How Will You Be Different This Passover Night?, an in-depth, introspective view of the story. And I love the title!
A Different Night: The Family Participation Haggadah, replete with kid and adult-friendly fun
The Passover Haggadah, by Adin Steinzaltz, a modern and traditional text and commentary from one of the great scholars and Orthodox rabbis of our time.
The Wandering is Over Haggadah: For those who want the Seder to be short and sweet, or to leave plenty of room for discussion, here’s an abridged, online version we used when our JCOGS Seder was only online. In its first pages, it has detailed instructions on getting ready for a Seder.

Still, for every Haggadah produced, there are countless additions to the Haggadah. So whether you want to focus on social justice issues, family-fun, the State of Israel, feminism, comedy, or whatever, your Passover Seder resource is a google search away.

But also, soon all of our members will be receiving in the mail a special insert from the scholars at Hadar, gifted by JCOGS. Here are a couple of quotes to peak your interest:

Musical Shabbat - ZOOM ONLY: Rabbi David leads an intimate service from the Mad River Valley. Members are encouraged to join us online for this uplifting musical service. There will be no in person service in the JCOGS building this Shabbat. - Friday, March 24 6:00pm-7:30pm

The Art of the Sermon: How to prepare, write, and give a D'var Torah: This two part series taught by Rabbi David for Mitzvah, teens, and adults will explore what it takes to interpret a piece of inspiring Jewish learning and teach it to others. You need not be the greatest Torah scholar to say something profound about a selection of Torah. You need not be the most charismatic public speaker to share some wisdom. Come with your willingness to explore and get ready to be inspired and to inspire others. Kiddush will be served and enjoyed, as well. - Saturday, March 25 10:00am-12:00pm

Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism - ONLINE ONLY - for those pre-registered: Our second online cohort of Shalom Hartman Institute limmud/learning at JCOGS. This year’s focus will be on the Ethics curriculum drawn from the Hartman cutting-edge Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism. - Monday, March 27 5:45pm-7:30pm

Mah Jongg - All Levels: Join us for Mah Jongg. All levels are welcomed, game cards and sets will be available. Instructors will be available to demonstrate and explain how the game is played - Tuesday, March 28 2:00pm-4:00pm

Community Shabbat Torah Service: Saturday, April 1 10:00am-12:00pm

Teens gather to watch "Fiddler on the Roof" and talk about the shtetl: Many American Jews can trace their heritage to the shtetls of what is today Ukraine. Teens join Amy Rosenthal for an evening of watching the classic film "Fiddler on the Roof" and sampling foods from the shtetl. - Sunday, April 2 4:00pm-7:00pm
