Earlier this week, Texas experienced flooding that left over 100 killed, including dozens of children enjoying a religious camping experience.
Throughout the afternoon and evening yesterday, July 10, we saw record rains crashing through the Northeast Kingdom, across Lamoille, and beyond where many of our members live. July 10 and 11 mark the anniversaries of the devastating flooding of both 2023 and 2024.
Even if not impacted directly, yesterday’s flooding and its impact can bring with it PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). If you have been impacted by the floods or need support, please let us know. Reach out to me or our president Cyndy at cyndy.wyatt@jcogs.org so we can offer our community’s help. Please know that you are in our prayers.
These incessant plagues feel Biblical because they are. The second paragraph of our sacred prayer, the Shema, warns: Vehaya im shamo’a tishme’u, “if you would but heed G-d’s commandments…” (Numbers 11:13) The paragraph goes on to describe how human behaviour impacts the consequences of Mother Nature.
El Malei Rachamim, G-d, full of compassion, Spread Your shelter of peace over all who have been harmed, Bring comfort to the grieving, strength to the responders, And awaken us to protect this Earth, before more is lost. Amen.
In prayer for everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi David P.S. Please join us tonight at 6pm as I co-lead a service with our own Rabbi Emmanuel Cantor.
