Dear JCOGS family,

On Sunday, the new month of Elul begins, and thus, the big lead up to the High Holy Days. There is much physical preparation in order to be ready for the holidays.

You will need some delicious challah and honey, which you can order through JCOGS here.

This year, you can learn how to make an apple pie with the amazing JCOGS member and baker/founder of Shugah. Shari Vermeulen will teach you how to make the most perfect and simple pie crust on September 15.

And don’t forget to schedule your calendar and register your guests, lest you or they miss one of the most important days of the year. We have a full array of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, and also plenty of food and schmoozing and music planned.

But baking, buying, and scheduling are only part of the preparation. There are emotional and spiritual preparations needed as well. The month of Elul is an acronym for Ani Ledodi V’Dodi Li, I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine. We are meant to use this month to awaken in ourselves a stirring of emotion and spiritual fervour that connects us in love to something greater than ourselves.

Take moments this month:

To consider the ways you have missed the mark and how you want to reimagine yourself in the new year.
To think about who you are remembering this season, and perhaps mark their loss in our Yizkor Book of Remembrance.
To awaken! Each Friday service of Elul, starting next week on September 2 (with myself and special guest Rabbi Arielle Lekach-Rosenberg), we will hear the sound of the shofar.

It’s time to prepare. So that we are ready. So that we can fully say: Hineini, here I am.
