Together with long-time JCOGS member Barbara Segal, I am pleased to announce a new limmud/learning opportunity at JCOGS. The curriculum for the course is drawn from the new, cutting-edge Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism from the renowned Shalom Hartman Institute. Here are the details:
Who: This is for anyone interested in Jewish text and tradition, regardless of fluency. We are creating a cohort of learners who want to opt in for the entire course of all eight sessions during the year.
What: We will explore a taste of the text-based Hartman curriculum, examining questions of peoplehood, practice, faith, and ethics. We will also be weaving additional experiential learning into the program, such as journaling, art and meditation. The course also includes access to special Hartman podcasts and additional texts, with the option of chevruta/paired learning between the monthly sessions.
Where: On Zoom, with a final in person celebration of learning.
When: Over eight sessions from October through May, we will meet monthly on the first Monday of each month from 5:30-7 p.m. The course officially begins October 4. You are invited to attend the first session to “try it out” before committing to the course.
Why: For thousands of years, Jews have prioritized education, believing that a foundation in learning is the gateway to a thoughtfully-led life. This has always been done among small groups, knowing that the bonds created among learners enhances the learning. We are planning a multi-access curriculum for everyone, from in depth students of Jewish tradition to those new to it.
Want to learn more?
Please join us in person on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Wednesday, September 8, where after services we will share a taste of learning together over a potluck meal.
