The Jewish Community of Greater Stowe in partnership with co-sponsors the Greater Stowe Interfaith Coalition, Stowe Jewish Film Festival and Vermont Holocaust Memorial warmly welcomes the greater community to this year’s Annual Gathering for Holocaust Remembrance (Yom HaShoah), on Wednesday, April 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Our program on the theme of “saving memories,” will feature prayers, an inclusive candle lighting ceremony, readings by local interfaith clergy; and the film “3 Minutes – A Lengthening.” A snippet of a home movie found in an attic in South Florida, taken in the late 1930’s, offers a cinematic glimpse into the lives of unsuspecting Jewish citizens of a small Polish village at the precipice o. WWII. By identifying people and details the life of this community, the filmmaker, Bianca Stigter, manages to restore humanity and individuality.

“When you see it, you want to scream to these people run away, go, go, go,” Stigter said. “We know what happens and they obviously don’t know what starts to happen, just a year later. That puts a tremendous pressure on those images. It is inescapable.” A Q&A facilitated by Stephen Pite, Assistant Dean of Goddard College and former director of the MFA in Film at VCFA, will follow. Glenn Kurtz, finder of the film footage and author of the book 3 Minutes, will join us via Zoom to answer questions. The film will be shown in-person and online to a limited audience. Registration is required for online viewing. The opening ceremony of prayers, readings, and candle lighting will be available in-person and online.

Together we will honor the memory of those who perished at the hands of evil and pay tribute to those who survived and have made a better world for us all.
