Vigil for Racial Justice

Thursday, June 4, 2020 12 Sivan 5780

12:00 PM - 1:00 PMMain Street in Stowe, VT

The Vigil for Racial Justice is a peaceful, community-wide gathering to make visible the silent and not-so-silent injustices perpetrated by white people against people of color in the United States. The vigil will shine a spotlight on the oppression and violence people of color live with every day, including people of color in Vermont, Lamoille County and Stowe. It is an event to name these injustices by inviting community members to line Main Street in Stowe, holding signs of support for black and brown people throughout the United States and our region. Lastly, this vigil is an opportunity for white people to take a stand against the economic, cultural, social, and personal gains at the expense of people of color. Stowe Police Department Chief Don Hull and Stowe Town Manager Charles Safford have worked with leaders of the event to support the event for the entire community.

This vigil is based on non-violent principles as a peaceful presence to honor and respect all people with dignity. This gathering is for the whole community. Every participant is asked to stand along Main Street in Stowe, no closer than 6 feet to any other individual, and respect the need for non-vigil participants to use the sidewalk. Participants are requested to bring signs of support for racial justice focused on peace and change. There will be no speeches, chants, music or other forms of communication often used at mass-gatherings. There will be no group or mass-movement by participants. Please park at Stowe Elementary School.

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join us.
