Families & Friends Shabbat service + potluck
Friday, November 15, 2019 • 17 Cheshvan 5780
6:00 PM - 8:30 PMJCOGSOur regular Friday night minyan welcomes Olam Chesed families to celebrate the blessing of Shabbat. Followed by a vegetarian potluck. Please list ingredients and do not include peanuts or peanut products.
At Olam Chesed this year we are exploring the theme of brachah/blessing. What better way to concretize our learning than by joining in community to welcome Shabbat with Rabbi David in song and sweetness? Ahad Ha’am -- a great literary figure of secular Hebrew culture in Israel -- famously said: “More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.” We come together to share the rituals and traditions of our heritage, but we are also part of a legacy. We will highlight the blessing of the children on Shabbat.
This week we will also be inaugurating the Shablool shel Shabbat project. Shablool is snail in Hebrew. Two ceramic snails will be going home each week to share Shabbat with an Olam Chesed family. Your Shabbat. However and whatever that means to your family, whether you have a custom or practice you'd like to share about in the journal, or perhaps the project will inspire your family to reignite a tradition or try out something new. Each of us -- each family, each individual -- has our own personal sense of Shabbat. Write, draw, collage ... be inspired to capture a bit of your family's Shabbat to share with other families in our community. Who would like to be the first two families?
A special thank you to Josh and Jenn Slen who will be bringing a soup dinner and challah to Olam Chesed on Wednesday Nov 13th.
