8 Nights of Eight Nights
Monday, July 22, 2019 • 19 Tammuz 5779
6:00 PM - 9:00 PMJCOGSAs part of a unique national fundraiser for HIAS, JCOGS is proud to host night #4 of a series of staged readings of EIGHT NIGHTS, a new play by award-winning playwright Jennifer Maisel.
EIGHT NIGHTS, directed by Wendi Stein, tells the story of a nineteen-year-old German-Jewish refugee, Rebecca Blum, as she forges a new life in America after surviving a concentration camp. Gracefully weaving heart-aching moments with dark yet life-affirming humor, the play takes place over the eight nights of Hanukkah, spanning eight decades of her life. EIGHT NIGHTS explores the refugee experience, not just of Jewish immigrants, but also the trauma mirrored in the African-American community, the interned Japanese citizens, and the current Syrian crisis.
Following the staged reading please join us for a panel discussion including playwright Jennifer Maisel; immigration lawyer Seth Lipschutz; Matt Thompson, coordinator of programs at the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program; and Edith Zfass, whose parents were refugees aided by HIAS and resettled in Montreal.
