Join us in the sanctuary for an uplifting musical service with the JCOGS band to welcome in Shabbat and celebrate Sukkot in community, followed by a delicious dinner oneg.  Over dinner, hear Rabbi Michael Cohen speak on the topic of “The Bible and the Environment.”

The Bible and the Environment - The Bible is full of timeless environmental messages and guidance. During this session we explore many of them. In our Climate Crisis era understanding and listening to what the Bible has to teach about the environment some would say is essential.

In April 2023, JCOGS, the Stowe Community Church, and St. John’s in the Mountains Episcopal Church will embark on the first ever Greater Stowe Holy Land Interfaith Journey to Israel, including a visit to the Arava Institute in Southern Israel.  Join Rabbi Michael Cohen for lunch and learn during the holiday of Sukkot as he speaks about “The Environment as a Bridge to Peace: The Arava Institute as a Case Study.”  

The Environment as a Bridge to Peace: The Arava Institute as a Case Study - The Arava Institute sits at the critical intersection of the environment and peace. For over a quarter of a century the Institute has brought together Israeli Jews, Palestinian citizens of Israel, Palestinians of the West Bank & Gaza, Jordanians, Moroccans, and International student. UVM has sent the most students to the Institute of any university in North America. Rabbi Michael, a member of the Arava faculty since its doors opened in 1996, will share his insights on the important work of the Institute from his first hand experiences there.

Rabbi Michael Margaretten Cohen is a faculty member of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and Bennington College. He teaches courses on conflict resolution, the Bible, and the environment. Rabbi Cohen has been a Policy Advisor to the Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, U.S. Department of State and a Speechwriter Adviser to the Office of the White House Speechwriters. He was recently named to the Advisory Board of the Partnership Peace of USAID established by Congress. Cohen, the rabbi emeritus of the Israel Congregation in Manchester Center, Vermont is the author of numerous articles that have appeared in the Middle East and the United States. He has a monthly commentary of the Torah reading of the week in the Jerusalem Post as well as a regular column in the Jerusalem Post called Letter from America. He is the author of "Einstein's Rabbi: A Tale of Science and the Soul."  Cohen co-founded of the Green Zionist Alliance. Cohen serves on the Board of Trustees of the Burr & Burton Academy,  the Mount Equinox Preservation Trust, the Green Sabbath Project, KaTO Architecture,  Shomrei Breishit: Rabbis and Cantors for the Earth, and the Jerusalem Peacebuilders. He is a recipient of the Eliav Sartawi Award for Middle East Journalism from the Search for Common Ground.
